The Seawork Maritime Sustainability Award celebrates organisations driving positive environmental change across the marine industry. Our place as a finalist reflects the measurable environmental and commercial benefits delivered by the MAN RePower Programme, providing vessel owners with a practical and cost-effective alternative to complete vessel replacement.
Unlike traditional fleet renewal, the MAN RePower Programme focuses on upgrading the propulsion system within an existing, structurally sound vessel. By replacing ageing engines with the latest MAN Marine Engines and integrating modern propulsion technologies, operators can significantly improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and extend the operational life of their vessels, while avoiding the environmental impact and material waste associated with building a new vessel.
The results are both immediate and measurable. A typical commercial vessel operating ten hours a day, five days a week, can reduce fuel consumption by approximately 36,400 litres per engine every year following a repower. At current fuel prices, this represents an annual saving of more than £55,000 per engine, or over £110,000 for a twin-engine installation, alongside lower emissions and reduced operating costs.
One project demonstrating these benefits is the successful repower of SWATH 2, operated by Maritime Craft Services. Originally powered by four Scania engines, the vessel was repowered with twin MAN D2862 engines, together with upgraded transmissions and control systems. The project reduced the number of engines, improved accessibility within the engine room and achieved compliance with IMO Tier III emissions standards, while delivering enhanced reliability, improved fuel efficiency and increased operational performance.
Beyond environmental improvements, the MAN RePower Programme provides long-term operational advantages, including increased reliability, enhanced safety, extended warranty options and complete propulsion package solutions tailored to each vessel’s operational profile. By extending the life of existing assets rather than replacing them, repowering offers a more resource-efficient and commercially viable approach to modernising marine fleets.
